Arms Trade Treaty

In December 2006 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon begin the process of drawing up a global Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). This process is now moving forward within the UN and British industry is wholeheartedly supporting the initiative.




Developing the Arms Trade Treaty

In 2008 a Group of Governmental Experts will begin a detailed examination of ?the feasibility, scope and ? parameters for a comprehensive, legally binding instrument establishing common international standards for the import, export and transfer of conventional arms'. The British Government is at the forefront of efforts to introduce a global Arms Trade Treaty and UK industry representatives attended the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's inaugural meeting to discuss the concept of an ATT in May 2005. Since that time industry has had a number of detailed consultations with government about the Arms Trade Treaty and has warmly welcomed the prospect of a global standard for defence exports.
